How can noting changes in your electricity bill signal a maintenance issue?

If your lifestyle hasn’t changed but your electricity bill suddenly jumps, it’s worth asking why. Maybe a particular appliance is running longer, a setting got changed, or a timer failed. But sometimes, a spike can hint at inefficiency or faults.

An ageing fridge using more power, a water heater thermostat stuck on, an AC unit struggling because filters or coils are dirty – these all pull extra electricity quietly. Faulty wiring in rare cases can also waste power and be a safety risk.

Keeping rough mental notes – “Our usual bill in this season is around X” – helps you notice when something seems off. When you do see a big difference, you can start checking: Are any appliances unusually hot? Are things left on more? Do certain devices sound different?

Spotting the pattern early lets you fix a small problem before it becomes a bigger expense or hazard.
