Why is it important to consider noise when choosing flooring for upper levels?

On upper floors, the floor is also someone else’s ceiling. Hard surfaces like tiles, stone or thin laminate can carry impact noise – footsteps, dropped items, moving chairs – quite loudly to rooms below.

If you choose flooring without thinking about sound, you might end up with a home where every movement upstairs echoes downstairs, which can be especially disturbing in bedrooms or living areas.

Using underlays, slightly softer materials, or adding rugs and runners in key spots helps absorb sound. Carpets or padded vinyl can make upper floors much quieter. Even choosing denser, better-installed hard flooring can reduce hollow noises.

Thinking about noise upfront is easier than trying to fix an echo later with lots of extra soft furnishings.
