How can checking roof overhangs help protect walls from heavy rain?

Roof overhangs – the parts that extend beyond the wall – are meant to throw water away from the building. If they’re too short, damaged, or not properly angled, rain can run down walls instead of being pushed clear.

By looking at overhangs during or after heavy rain, you can see how water behaves. Does it drip well away from the wall, or streak down the surface? Are there areas where water seems to blow under and soak the top of the walls frequently?

If walls are constantly wet near the top because overhangs aren’t doing their job, you may eventually see damp patches, paint damage or cracks. Adjusting or repairing overhangs, adding drip edges, or improving gutters can help protect the structure below.

It’s a small detail with a big impact on how well your walls age.
