Why is it helpful to leave some shelves partly empty when styling them?

Stuffing every shelf with items might feel like you’re making the most of the space, but visually it often feels heavy and cluttered. Leaving some breathing room – maybe an empty corner or a shelf that holds just a couple of objects – lets the eye rest.

This space makes the things you do display look more special. A single vase, a few favourite books, or a framed photo on a relatively clear shelf stands out more than when surrounded by twenty other items.

Empty space also gives you flexibility. As life moves on, you can add new things without everything feeling overpacked from day one.

Think of shelves like paragraphs in writing. If there are no gaps, it’s tiring to read.
